Whispers,
2022
Video projection. 4 mins, fabric map 145x65 cm, sewing thread, and needle
The streets, windows, buildings, and the entire neighbourhood whispers, and I am listening with my body.
In this project, I am stitching my feet to a printed map of the neighbourhood where I grew up in East Amman, Jordan.
This act is trying to explore and reflect upon my interior and exterior daily experiences embedded within my inner body in areas where women face societal surveillance and control. I consider the act of sewing my upper skin surface to the map a disruptive action used to stimulate the ability to question daily movements in familiar spaces, spaces that can be considered home.
This short video work serves as a response to my research project, Hidden Dimension. Which explores the social constraints imposed on women's bodily experiences and the perceptual sensitivity to bodily movement.
